Wizkid and Tems have bagged a major award at the BET Awards 2022 ceremony. The duo won in the Best Collaboration category with their hit song ‘Essence‘.
The BET Awards took place yesterday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and it was filled with some remarkable Nigerian artists creating history.
Tems who had won a BET award for the Best International Act, also became the first female Nigerian afrobeat singer to achieve this feat. Fireboy also became the first to perform on the BET main stage.
Tems bagged two awards from the event as her song with Wizkid was also voted winner in the Best Collaboration category.
Wizkid’s ‘Essence‘ has been on many top lists of songs since its release and it is undoubtedly deserving of the award. The artist had previously won a BET HER Award for his collaboration with Beyonce on ‘Brown Skin Girl’. However, with his song ‘Essence‘, Big Wiz has now become the first African lead artist to win in the Best Collaboration category.

Wizkid and Tems beat others who were nominated for the category including songs like Doja Cat feat. SZA – ‘Kiss Me More’ , Drake feat. Future & Young Thug – ‘Way 2 Sexy’, DJ Khaled fest. Lil Baby & Lil Durk – ‘Every Chance I Get’.
Although the lead artist was not present at the event, he was rightly represented by Tems who received the award and gave a heartwarming speech.
